What to do with your insecurities as an artist. by Suzanne-Helmigh, journal
What to do with your insecurities as an artist.
Openly showing our insecurities seems to be trending and it’s good that more and more people are sharing their struggles! I won’t be lying when I tell you I get people approach me nearly every day, expressing their insecurity in their work and seemingly unreachable goals for their career. They’ll ask me to look at their work and I’ll help them lift their spirit. I tell them that we all started somewhere and all we can do is work hard and see ourselves grow over time and that their work has potential.
Yet the more I do this, the more I realize that simply having someone’s spirit lifted doesn’t help them, it
How to make your own art education by TamberElla, journal
How to make your own art education
Hey guys,
I periodically get young artists reaching out to me, asking about how they can become a professional artist. I remember feeling exactly as lost as many of them certainly feel. I put together this guide in order to have a resource I can provide.
Check it out here
It outlines everything I've done and am doing to further my career, and everything I've seen my successful friends and peers do as well. It's not a definitive guide of what you "have" to do, as there are thousands of paths you can take, every one as valid as the last! But hopefully its a good starting point to building a path to an art career.
Cheers guys and happy holid
Learning resources and some thoughts. by mannequin-atelier, journal
Learning resources and some thoughts.
Good old fashion learning materials. Who recommend that these days ? All I see are just 'ready to apply instantly recipes'.
There is no longer path to follow but rather 'i want to arrive at finish line without too much running'.
I see this desire for shortcuts. No desire for knowledge. It's passé.
Why bother with basics when You can use recipe and... voila! Instant gratification. Instant result. But without help of every fancy shortcut method we have, the facade falls.
In real life it will eventually shows - the lacks of skills.
Yeah. Some observation.
After making this little statement in the beginning I would love to recommend
To improve and become really good at art. Isn't that what all of us, artists, secretly wish for? That we, one day, become as good as the idols we've looked up to.
Well, we can't be all born with mad talent. But there are certainly ways to speed up the process for you! In the journal here, I listed some tips and tricks that helped me getting to the point where I am now. I thought I'd share them with you. And maybe you can add to the list. I'm always willing to learn.
:bulletred: Give up on being a mangaka -- or hold more realistic expectations
Admit it. Most of us here started drawing manga because we liked the style at a certain point. How
5/4/2015 UPDATE: Added preface at the beginning and Inspiration at the end! added some thoughts on some other things I wanted to share.
Alright, so this is a comment and question I've been receiving a lot from people!
How did you improve so fast?
Firstly, I want to say I do not think of myself as a professional artist, teacher or someone who "knows the secret to becoming a master artist". These are just things that I have picked up over the years, and noticed so I thought I might as well share my experience with improvement in effort to help others find their own paths of improvement and learning as artists. There are still many things I ha

'Life Drawing 5' by algaegoblin (https://www.deviantart.com/algaegoblin)
Do you know how to sketch human figures but do you want to refine your anatomy skills? Or do you not know anatomy at all and you are tired to trust your imagination? Did you notice you create disproportions in your drawings?
If you are aspiring artists and you already have your own style, you might as well believe you have no need of a guide, but you are wrong. Before exaggerating human proportions and begin to have your own style, you first have to know the basics.
This little guide is the result of an accurate research and 5 years of high school of art, and it's created for all those who want to learn s
I get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend ~Dana-T (https://www.deviantart.com/dana-t) has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out h
Fast lane to becoming a better artist. by Suzanne-Helmigh, journal
Fast lane to becoming a better artist.
I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
1. Willpower.
2. Endurance.
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.

Where to get started before you can apply for work by Suzanne-Helmigh, journal
Where to get started before you can apply for work
There is no such thing as suddenly knowing when you are ready to turn your
passion into your profession. But there is a way of measuring your chances on being
able to get work and eventually sustain a living from it.
Accepting commissions or freelance for low payment won't help you. You can think any penny counts, but it will lower the worth of your work and damage the market.
:bulletblue: How to measure that you are ready?
You probably have high goals, but they are usually not your first step. You must search out the clients who can be that first step. Often found in the card game industry, book cover illustrations and smaller game compan
